How we verify answers

Every answer in the database is checked against the completed grid.

Source first. Each clue is recorded from the puzzle as published, with its number, direction and date. We do not guess answers from the clue text.

Grid check. An answer is only marked verified once it matches the completed grid: correct length, correct letters, and consistent with every crossing entry. A mismatch anywhere holds the whole puzzle until it is resolved.

Consistency across history. When a clue already exists in the database, the new answer is compared with previous answers. Different answers for the same clue are normal — that is the point of the clue pages — but a new answer with the same length as an old one is double-checked before it goes live.

Corrections. Publishers occasionally correct a puzzle after release. When that happens we update the affected answer and note the change on the puzzle page.
